E. Schmeckenbecher 1-bird 30-Hr Cuckoo
Clock, modern.
This is an average size Cuckoo clock with one
bird. The movement is signed "E.
Schmeckenbecher" and also has the REGULA
brand stamp. A good friend gave me a large box of
old clock parts and said that among other things,
the box contained "most of a cuckoo
clock". Well he was right about there being
enough parts to assemble a Cuckoo, but it's
pretty clear that not all the parts came from the
same clock. The Regula movement is signed
"E. Schmeckenbecher" and I believe that
the movement, whistles, bird, and the box part of
the house were probably all from the same clock
made by E. Schmeckenbecher. The "house
decorations", hands, weights, and pendulum
are not original to this clock. I repainted the
house so all the parts would match. For some
reason the cuckooing was too fast so I have a
smaller than anticipated weight on the strike
side. The clock runs well and keeps decent time
for a cuckoo. It has little market value, but
because a friend gave me the parts, and it was
basically resurected from a box of junk, I have
become attached to it so it has become "one
of the family".
An on-line search provided the following:
"Emil Schmeckenbecher was a clock
manufacturer of many Cuckoo clocks. He made the
housing, and the clock mechanisms were made by
Regula. These originate from the Black forest
region of Germany (or, West Germany as it was
then)."
